Gender and Human Rights

Introduction

The right to health is a fundamental human right enshrined in international legal frameworks, including the World Health Organization (WHO) Constitution, which underscores every individual’s entitlement to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.

This right is interconnected with other essential rights, such as education, housing, work, and access to information.

According to the Global Fund, global efforts by communities, governments, civil society, and health partners have made significant progress in combating HIV. However, human rights violations and gender inequality threaten these gains, increasing vulnerability to HIV and limiting access to essential health services. Discriminatory laws and policies targeting key populations and marginalised groups such as sex workers and drug users promote stigma and violence.

Thus, governments have a legal obligation to develop inclusive policies and legislation that ensure universal access to quality healthcare while addressing underlying health disparities, including poverty, stigma, and discrimination. Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) rooted in primary healthcare is a critical step in fulfilling this right, promoting equitable and affordable access to health services for all.

As an organization, EANNASO ensures that human rights and gender equality are achieved through its different programming. Thus, the month of February has been dedicated to calling out to all to embrace gender equality in healthcare programming. The “Gender and Human Rights” section of the EANNASO 2024-2028 strategy report focuses on enhancing health equity, social inclusion, and access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, particularly marginalized groups, women, and girls.
